The 2024 U.S. Open is being played at North Carolina’s Pinehurst No. 2, where the world’s best will compete to take home the third of golf’s four majors held this year. Scottie Scheffler, winner of the 2024 Masters Tournament, and Xander Schauffele, winner of the 2024 PGA Championship, opened play as the favorites on ESPN BET, but it is Rory McIlroy who enters the second round as the new favorite after tying Patrick Cantlay for the lead by shooting 65 in the first round.
Recent U.S. Open winners Wyndham Clark, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka will look to add to their trophy cases. Should Clark win, he’ll be the first back-to-back winner of the U.S. Open since Koepka in 2017 and 2018. McIlroy will attempt to win the trophy for the first time since 2011, while 2021 champ John Rahm withdrew on Tuesday because of a foot infection.
Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland are among the other favorites looking to secure their first U.S. Open trophy.
The last time the U.S. Open was held at Pinehurst, in 2014, it was won by Martin Kaymer, who finished the first day of this year’s tournament tied for 16th at 70.
