West Ham took the lead in the 26th minute after a lengthy VAR review ruled Nayef Aguerd was onside when he headed in a free-kick from Thilo Kehrer.
Jarrod Bowen came close to doubling the Hammers’ lead with a superb strike but was denied by the crossbar.
The same piece of woodwork denied Southampton a late equaliser after January signing Paul Onuachu came agonisingly close with a header.
