Former midfielder Didi Hamann thinks Liverpool should be “seriously” thinking about signing a Premier League star from a rival club.
The Reds could look to target reinforcements in the January transfer window after a poor start to the campaign that has seen them win just four of their opening 12 Premier League fixtures.
Jurgen Klopp’s men looked like they were back on track with recent victories over defending champions Manchester City and West Ham but back-to-back defeats to Nottingham Forest and Leeds United over the last two weekends have seen them take a step backwards.
And former Liverpool midfielder Hamann thinks the Reds need to invest in the squad with Tottenham forward Son Heung-min seen as the ideal addition to Klopp’s squad.
Son finished last season as joint top goalscorer in the Premier League with Mohamed Salah but the 30-year-old has not been quite as effective this campaign with three goals in 13 league appearances.
“Son is a brilliant player and he would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool – I’m a big fan of his,” Hamann told BoyleSports.
“He’s technically very gifted, can finish with both feet and he’s a very smart player so he’d be a great signing and should seriously be considered.
“But we know that Liverpool haven’t been the biggest spenders and I think Son could cost a bomb.
“If there was an opportunity to sign him, he’d be a great player for Liverpool.”
Midfield has been blamed for many of Liverpool’s problems offensively and defensively and West Ham’s Declan Rice has been one player consistently linked with a possible move to Anfield.
However, the Hammers midfielder would be expensive and Hamann would like to see Liverpool go for a “more adventurous” signing like Newcastle United’s Joelinton.
Hamann added: “Liverpool are 14 or 15 points behind the top of the table now and I don’t think that one player makes up that many points.
“Danny Murphy is right to suggest Declan Rice is a very capable player but I think it depends on how Fabinho comes back into the season because he’s been really disappointing but he’s a really brilliant player.
“I would like Liverpool to sign someone a bit more adventurous, someone like Joelinton from Newcastle who has a physical presence, can get you a goal and he has the full package. A player like him would suit Liverpool down to the ground.”
On the Brazilian, Hamann added (via the Liverpool Echo): “I think getting a player of his quality in January is near enough impossible and that should’ve been done in the summer.”
