Man Utd goalkeeper Dean Henderson reportedly rejected a ‘proposal’ from Erik ten Hag during the January transfer window so he could remain at Nottm Forest.
Henderson joined Forest on loan ahead of this season. This move came about after he fell down the pecking order at Man Utd.
The Red Devils prevented Henderson from leaving the club during the January transfer window in 2022.
The Englishman later hit out at Man Utd and accused the club’s hierarchy of making him “waste” a year of his career.
Henderson has played 20 times for Nottm Forest this season but he has been out of action in recent months as a result of a thigh injury.
He has likely burnt bridges at Man Utd and he is likely to leave the club this summer. Chelsea are among the clubs being linked with him.
The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell is reporting that Ten Hag asked Henderson to return to Man Utd in January after Martin Dubravka was recalled by Newcastle United.
Whitwell adds Henderson ‘preferred to play regularly’ at Forest and ‘two clubs have made contact over a permanent transfer’ before this summer. The report for The Athletic states.
‘Spurs know all about Henderson, whose future will be decided once the current campaign is over.
‘He has experienced a productive loan at Nottingham Forest, saving two penalties and endearing himself to supporters, but has been out with a thigh injury since January 14. The 26-year-old is due back in three weeks and should get more games — even with Keylor Navas recruited.
‘Henderson could have spent the second half of the season back at United. Ten Hag made the proposal during a telephone conversation after Newcastle recalled Dubravka, but the goalkeeper preferred to play regularly at Forest.
‘It will be the same circumstance in the summer if De Gea re-signs — and though Ten Hag has not ruled out trying Henderson in pre-season, this may be the summer when the club cash in. United are determined to get better at selling players at the right moment, and Henderson, contracted to at least 2025, is worth a good amount of money at present. Two clubs have made contact over a permanent transfer.
‘Were Henderson to leave, United could be in the market for another deputy. Heaton has acquitted himself well when playing, and United have an optional year on his contract, which expires this summer. But in the twilight of his career, Heaton may want regular football.
‘United have another season clause in De Gea’s contract. But it was decided long ago they would not trigger it and instead look to agree on an extension, which is the hope on both sides.’
